Historic Wilmington and the surrounding areas are rich with colorful history. Spanish Galleon's, Revolutionary and Civil War battles and occupation, pirates, and blockade runners are just a part of the story. Several great plantations still stand preserved including Poplar Grove Plantation, a peanut plantation purchased in 1795; Orton Plantation an historic landscape designed around the 1735 mansion and colonial rice fields overlooking the Cape Fear River; and Airlie Gardens, originally a land grant from King George II to the Ogden brothers in 1735, now a magnificent public formal garden.

Downtown Wilmington sits proudly on the Cape Fear River offering great outdoor dining, a rich cultural energy comprised of multiple galleries, Thalian Hall, The Red Barn Theatre, as well as many additional theatre companies, plus UNCW and its venue for international performances.
